Hertford County is seeking to fill the following full-time position in Public Works Department.

WATER MAINTENANCE WORKER

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate semiskilled work reading and repairing water meters; does related work as required, Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Water Supervisor.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Reading and repairing meters; recording consumption; connecting/disconnecting service; preparing and maintaining records.

The following functions are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

Reads meters on assigned routes and records consumption.

Keeps records of meters read and reports meters not accessible for reading.

Ensures that meters are properly installed and are functioning properly; checks for meter defects and leaks.

Repairs and tests meters; records change outs.

Processes service orders; disconnects/reconnects service as needed.

Checks wells and takes chlorine readings.

Maintains and repairs meters; removes and resets various sizes of meter boxes.

Sets new meters; cleans and tests meters; locks up meters.

Maintains records on meter change-outs; keeps inventory of parts.

Checks for and repairs leaks; locates water lines.

Assists in installing new taps and repairs broken liens.

Performs general landscaping and grounds keeping around fire hydrants and valves; flushes water lines.

Assists with office operations as required; sorts water bills; picks up office mail.

May be required to work after normal working hours in an on-call status.

Performs relates tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in the reading of meters and recording consumption; general knowledge of the geography and street locations of the County; ability to accurately read and record consumption; ability to walk for continuous periods under varying climatic conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Physical Requirements

This is medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force constantly and up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, inspecting small defects or parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise, vibrations, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils.

Special Requirements

Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina. Must obtain C-Distribution certification within 2 years of employment and B-Distribution certification within 3 years of employment.

Annual Salary Range:

$26,083-40,428
