Roanoke-Chowan Community College
Capital Projects Plan & Funding Request

Chairman Ronald Gatling and Commissioner André Lassiter not only have full-time careers, serve on the Hertford County Board of Commissioners but they also serve on the Board of Trustees for Roanoke-Chowan Community College (RCCC). In their capacity as Trustees, they were joined by Trustee Albert Vann, Trustee Kimberly Turner, Dr. Murray Williams, RCCC President, Dr. Latoya Wiley, RCCC Vice President, Stephanie Benson, RCCC Vice President, Jamie Woods, RCCC Vice President, Dr. William Wright, Superintendent of Hertford County Public Schools and David B. Cotton, Hertford County Manager to provide an overview and briefing of the Capital Projects Plan for RCCC to North Carolina Representative Howard Hunter, III, North Carolina Senator Don Davis, North Carolina Senator Ernestine Bazemore.

Dr. Williams, RCCC President explained eloquently with methodical detail the needs for a Universal Technical Training Center, Fine Arts Building and Allied Health Building to meet the needs of our community, industries and healthcare for decades to come. Chairman Gatling stated, “[the] impact it will have on our community is bigger than the facility. [As well], through the partnerships represented here today, it will offer our community, our region an opportunity for future generations.”

Representative Hunter, Senator Davis and Senator Bazemore listened attentively and were engaged with the group making substantive inquiries, which were confidently responded to by Chairman Gatling, Commissioner Lassiter, Dr. Williams and her staff.

The RCCC Board of Trustees along with Dr. Williams concluded the meeting with sound justifications for funding a single global capital project as the needs in all three business sectors are immediate and long term. Commissioner Lassiter closed with, “the greatest antidote to poverty is an education. We have a tremendous opportunity to position Hertford County and our region for the future.”
