Hertford County is seeking to fill the following full-time position in Public Buildings Department.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER

General Definition of Work

Performs responsible semiskilled and unskilled work in a variety of landscaping, building and grounds maintenance assignments; does related work as assigned. Work is performed under regular supervision. Limited supervision may be exercised over assigned personnel.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Mowing County lawns and trimming trees, making repairs to the interior and exterior of County buildings; repairing leaks, patching pipes and changing light bulbs; maintaining the appearance of County buildings; sweeping, mopping and cleaning.

The following functions are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

Sweeps, vacuums or dust mops assigned areas.

Washes windows.

Waxes and buffs tile floors.

Removes trash from buildings; picks up trash and debris around the outside of buildings.

Scrubs and cleans toilets including mirrors, wash basins, urinals, commodes, etc.

Fills tissue, towel and soap dispensers.

Dusts furniture, walls, windowsills and other woodwork; moves office furniture when required.

Keeps track of supplies needed for maintaining the appearance of County buildings.

Gathers and disposes of refuse, litter, and trash; empties wastebaskets.

Mows and trims grass with power mowers and string trimmers; prunes shrubbery; edges curbs and walkways; weeds flower beds; policies grounds, picks up and disposes of debris.

Performs minor maintenance and repair tasks on interior and exterior of buildings including patching leaking roofs, fixing broken bathroom fixtures, etc.

Replaces interior and exterior light bulbs; replaces ceiling tiles.

Inspects fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.

Transports supplies to work sites.
Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of building maintenance and cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently; general knowledge of the use of common power tools and how to operate safely and effectively; ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates; ability to read and write; physical ability to perform heavy manual work; ability to work independently.


Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and a minimum of 1

year experience in building cleaning, landscaping, and/or grounds maintenance work.

Physical Requirements

This is medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work regularly requires stooping, crouching, standing, and walking; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for the use of measuring devices and operation of motor vehicles or equipment. The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.

Special Requirements

Possession of appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.

Annual Salary Range:
Grade 7: $24,130 $37,402
