Under the direction of the Hertford County Sheriff’s Department, Hertford County Animal Control is responsible for enforcing all state and local laws, ordinances and resolutions relating to the care, custody and canvassing for control of animals. Hertford County Animal Control works cooperatively with the local Health Department with the enforcement of state laws pertaining to dangerous and/or vicious dogs, and confinement rules and regulations.

Adoption
In cooperation with Paws of Hertford County, Inc., you can adopt a pet from Animal Control for a small fee.

Spay and Neutering
In an effort to control the pet population, as well as the number of animals euthanized each year, Hertford County participates in the State of North Carolina’s free spay and neutering.  This program offers spay and neutering services for dogs and cats to Hertford County citizens (who are low-income persons) at no charge, on a year-round basis.
