Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD)
In 2018, the citizens of Hertford County were introduced to a new type of service when they called 9-1-1 for medical emergencies. Our staff is nationally and State certified in Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) program. This credentialing allows the dispatcher to obtain more information about a patient to help provide aid to the patient until the arrival of the responding EMS unit. EMD focuses on a series of questions based around the chief complaint the caller provided. These questions and instructions were created by the National Academy of Emergency Dispatch and focuses on (33) different medical situations.

Citizen: Why is it when I call 911, I am asked a series of questions? Doesn’t my information show up when I call?
Dispatch: Hertford County E 911 is obligated to ensure citizens that the appropriate resources are promptly sent to the correct location. It is imperative that the E911 Dispatcher verifies your information in order to relay pertinent details to the responding units.
