Income Maintenance Caseworker III

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of this position is to determine Medicaid eligibility by initial intake and reviewing of ongoing cases.  The worker may also be expected to determine eligibility for special assistance cases and private living arrangement cases. This position requires worker to know basic laws, policies, procedures and regulations and to apply them accurately.

This position is responsible for the following programs:  Medical Assistance and Cost of Care for Long Term Care cases for Disabled and Aged, Domiciliary Special Assistance to Disabled under 65 and over, Medicaid for Aged, Blind, and Disabled, Medicare Qualified Beneficiaries, Carolina ACCESS Managed Care Program, Family Planning Waiver Limited benefits for males 19-60 years of age and females 19-55 years old, Energy Program (LIEAP & CIP), and Food Pantry & General.


Other Work Characteristics –  Worker will interview clients, verify income, residence, ownership of property, etc., coordinate with other units, agencies, and organizations such as the hospital, Health Department and Child Support Enforcement, etc.  The worker may interview clients seeking assistance with nursing home and domiciliary care as well as client seeking medical assistance in private living arrangement.

This job involves constant contact with the public.  The person in this position maintains and manages an ongoing caseload, does reviews monthly, and is responsible for making all necessary changes to the ongoing cases.  The Income Maintenance Caseworker III is required to work very closely with all other agencies, federal, state, and local as necessary to complete required assignments.  Home visits are made for cases that should be investigated more thoroughly of in situation where client is unable to come to the office.   


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience Required – As rules and regulations in this program are continually changing, the Income Maintenance Caseworker III is required to learn new manual material, be able to apply it and interpret it to the public.  Basic background knowledge of computer technology and mathematical skills to complete complex budget and deductibles is required. 

The work hours of this position are from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday with an hour for lunch.  There are occasions when the Income Maintenance III may be required to work outside of these hours in order to complete the activities of the job.  In addition, the staff is required to work shelter management when the agency is called upon in times of disaster relief or emergency.  Shelter duty is a requirement of the job.


The worker is required to have a valid driver’s license, access to dependable transportation and a working telephone.


Required Minimum Education

Two years of experience as an Income Maintenance Caseworker II.
